Hank Fien is a Regional Coordinator for the Oregon Reading First Center at the College of Education, University of Oregon, which provides high quality professional development and program analysis to Oregon Reading First Schools. He was a School Coordinator for two federally funded research grants housed in the Institute for the Development of Educational Achievement (IDEA): Project Optimize and Project CIRCUITS, aimed at preventing reading difficulties for at-risk children. Fien also conducted reading assessment evaluations for the U.S. Department of Education's Reading First Initiative and currently works as a Dynamic Indicators of Basic Early Literacy Skills (DIBELS) consultant/trainer with districts and schools across Oregon, Hawaii, Alabama, and Pennsylvania. He is a panel member for the Oregon Department of Education Review of Comprehensive and Supplemental/Intervention Programs.
Fien completed his Ph.D in School Psychology at the University of Oregon in August, 2004. He earned his Bachelor of Arts in History at Glassboro State College in Glassboro, N.J. and completed his Master's of Science in Special Education at the University of Oregon.
Before coming to the University of Oregon, he worked as a full-time, long-term assignment substitute teacher in elementary classrooms in Millville, New Jersey and was a Family Advocate/Teacher for the federally funded pre-school program Head Start.
He is a contributing author with Simmons, D.C. (2003), Reading strategies and activities: A resource for students at risk for reading difficulties, including dyslexia, published by Texas Center for Reading and Language Arts.
